LIHUE — Locals expressed mixed feelings about the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote Wednesday to impeach President Donald Trump.
The Garden Island went out and interviewed people Thursday, making several stops, starting at Plantation Coffee in Lihue. When asked how they felt about the impeachment, some had little to say and others a lot.
“I don’t know much about it,” said Koriann Kuali‘i.
On her lunch break, Megan Lyons said, “I honestly didn’t understand what impeachment was until yesterday. So I had to learn that impeachment doesn’t mean he’s out, it’s just the first step in the process.”
Others like Brandy Falvey, who was born and raised on Kauai, said, “It’s a great thing and a waste of money.”
There were others like Javon Nasato, who said, “It’s an embarrassing moment for our country.”
Tina Funk, who works nearby, had a different view.
“I’m disgusted beyond words that the Democrats who preach about the law and doing the right thing had so much power without evidence to do this,” she said. “If they can do this to the president, then we have no chance of survival should something happen to us, and that’s scary.”
Her husband, Walter Funk, said, “I feel it was done with bias intentions. The Republicans weren’t allowed to have their witness there.”
Like President Barack Obama, Trump has strong supporters who are grateful for all he has done.
“I’m against it because he has done so much since he’s been in office, compared to Obama or Clinton,” said Kalena Kennedy.
Single parent Nikki Lumacad had a different take.
“Thank God! Now families don’t need to worry about being separated from one another, and my kids need a president that cares for the people, not only the rich and wealthy,” she said. “Now our kids have a brighter future.”
When asked how she felt about Trump being impeached, Rochelle Galiza said, “He wants to build the wall, so yes, I want him impeached.”
