LIHUE – The Hawaii Department of Transportation reminds the public of temporary full closures on Kuhio Highway at Mile Marker 1, the hill approaching Hanalei Bridge. The full closures will last about 30 minutes starting at 7:30 a.m. continuing hourly today through Thursday.
Today, Tuesday, and Thursday, the work involving the temporary full closures will end at 2 p.m. On Wednesday, the work will end at noon. Temporary full closures are expected to start at the times in the table below.
The full closures are needed to safely install drapemesh on the upper slope as part of the project to stabilize the hillside above Kuhio Highway, HDOT said in a press release.
During work hours motorists in both directions on Kuhio Highway will be stopped as helicopters place the mesh above the highway.
Some Hanalei business owners were upset that the full closures were coming during the holiday season, shortly before Christmas, and feared it would take a toll on sales. The area continues to rebound from the April 2018 flooding on the North Shore that heavily impacted businesses.
The business owners asked HDOT to delay the work until after Christmas, but the work will continue as scheduled.
HDOT also said there will be night closures of Kuhio Highway on the North Shore starting tonight through Thursday. There will be a full closure of the highway to and from Wainiha and Haena starting at 7:30 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. the following morning.
Additional night closures are expected the week of Jan. 5-8.
