The Garden Island/Zonta Club of Kauai Christmas Fund is in full swing. It’s a chance to help those who would otherwise go without.
In the past three years, it has raised about $80,000 and helped about 2,000 families and individuals.
Donations are used by Zonta Club members to benefit applicants to the program. Gifts are distributed through social-service agencies. Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island is sharing stories about those facing challenges (we don’t use their real names), which includes Rick, an elderly man who lives alone on a limited, fixed income. He enjoys fishing and walking on the beach to collect shells. He also recently started painting with watercolors. This holiday season would bring a smile to his face if he had some art supplies.
Mariel is a single mother of two daughters. She also has a limited income and has little left over at the end of the month. This Christmas, it would be nice to provide the family with a Christmas tree and presents. Mariel would love a new microwave, while her daughters would be delighted with new clothes and dolls.
This year’s effort received a big boost when a donor pledged up to $5,000 to match donations of at least $150. Donations have been coming in, from $100 to $1,000, and organizers say the fund drive is going well.
