If you were the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and alive on Kauai today, what would you love to say to our island community?
The Interfaith Roundtable of Kauai is sponsoring a celebration of what would be the late King’s 91st birthday.
A way to begin this celebration now is to create a short piece of writing or other media to submit for sharing with the community on that day. Ideally, these sermons, poems, prose essays, raps, songs, or spoken-word scripts will be only a page or two and could be presented in one to three minutes.
Send submissions to sbackinoff24@gmail.com. The review committee will find a way so that many pieces can be seen and heard or seen at the holiday celebration at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue on Monday, Jan. 20.
Those authoring selected pieces will be contacted for presentation during what will be a musical evening, according to a press release.
To kick start the creative process, here are three quotes from MLK:
• “Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity;”
• “When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incapable of being conquered;”
• “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.”
“Two years ago we had three amazing responses from 8-year-olds, one high school, one community college student and one older man,” said organizer Steve Backinoff. “I am looking forward to an outpouring of creative inspirational thought from you all.”
