LIHUE — Kauai Police Department is still chipping away at the derelict and abandoned vehicles along roadsides, in beach parking lots, and even in prominent places around the island.
For instance, several vehicles that have been rusting in the sand behind Wailua Golf Course and along the road to Marine Camp in the Wailua area. They’ve been there for several months, according to area resident Maria Almeida.
A little further north up Kuhio Highway, Skip Schaefer has been watching an abandoned vehicle at the Aliomanu parking lot for several months, too. He’s taken pre and post-vandalism photos, the latest taken Monday.
“The more abandoned vehicles sit, the more they encourage vandalism,” Schaefer said, pointing out the abandoned BMW X-5 has now been flipped on its side.
Documenting the abandoned cars is a good idea, according to KPD. In fact, they’re asking for the public’s help in holding accountable those who are ditching their vehicles illegally.
“If anyone from the public sees someone dumping or leaving a derelict vehicle on the side of the road, please take a photo and/or video of it and it send to police,” said KPD spokeswoman Kim Tamaoka.
As of August, there were 260 pending complaints in the queue for abandoned or derelict vehicles, according to County of Kauai, and more are being added.
It’s been a topic of on the floor at Kauai County Council meetings, has been part of conversation in the community and KPD is working on hiring a second abandoned vehicle coordinator to help with the workload.
The public should report all abandoned or derelict vehicles on public roads or property to by emailing abandonedvehicles@kauai.gov.
How lame is this. Every vehicle has a VIN number in several places. Trace the registered owner and send them the appropriate bill for towing it out. Do not renew their drivers license until they pay
There is so much Abandoned vehicles from Kekaha to Hā’ena It’s ridiculous. But its cause there is no where or no company or no place that locals can take there cars to that doesn’t charge.. so the problem cannot be addressed if there is no solution or place to take the cars.. if there was someplace for us locals to take them I’m pretty sure there would be no abandon vehicles at all.
