LAHAINA — Roads and an airport have reopened as firefighters continue to battle a west Maui brush fire.
Maui officials say the fire above Kahana ridge is 45% contained Wednesday. About 1.5-square miles (3.8-square kilometers) burned, threatening some homes, prompting evacuations, and forcing the closure of the Kapalua Airport.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation says the small airport reopened Wednesday morning for normal operations.
Maui County spokesman Brian Perry says officials are checking to assess damage and looking into unconfirmed reports of burned or singed roofs.
County officials say about six people checked into a shelter at the Lahaina Civic Center Tuesday, but no one stayed overnight. The shelter is closed Wednesday.
There are no reports of injuries.
