Honorato Dafun Dela Cruz
Honorato Dafun Dela Cruz of Kekaha passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Sept. 30, 2019, at the age of 83.
He was born in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Sept. 7, 1936. He retired from Kekaha Sugar Company as a lab analyst.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, parents Esteban and Marina Dela Cruz, sisters Consolacion Tabije, Paula Dela Cruz and Vergie Christobal and brother Mateo Dela Cruz.
He is survived by wife Melie Pacol Dela Cruz, daughter Melonor (Tadashi) Dela Cruz-Muratake, grandsons Avery Dela Cruz and Issaiah Dela Cruz-Muratake, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, Oct. 18, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and services at 10 a.m.
John Masato Uyeno
John Masato Uyeno passed away at his home on Sept. 6, 2019.
He was the former publisher of The Garden Island newspaper, where he worked for 52 years of his life.
A civic-minded gentleman, Uyeno was an active participant in the Boys Scouts of America and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in 1964 for long service to Scouting.
He served over 20 years as a trustee and board member for the Wilcox Memorial Hospital and the Wilcox Memorial Hospital Foundation, and was president of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce in 1975.
An active member of the East Kauai Lions Club, he had the honor of being elected as district governor for the District 50 Hawaii Lions Club International from 1987 to 1988.
He wax preceded in death by parents Masaru and Kay Uyeno, brothers Kay and Harold Uyeno, daughter Cheryl Leiko Taylor, and most recently by his wife Diane Uyeno.
He is survived by brother Tokio (Helen) Uyeno, nephew Alden Uyeno, and extended family Rona and Calvin Sakai and Roberta and Sidney Yanagawa.
Funeral services will be held at Lihue Christian Church on Saturday, Oct. 12, with visitation at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
Samson Kapae Mahuiki Jr.
Samson Kapae Mahuiki Jr. of Haena, died on Sept. 25, 2019, at the age of 50.
Born Sept. 6, 1969, to Samson Kapae Mahuiki Sr. and the late Bernadette Ka‘iulani Alapa‘i Mahuiki, father-in-law Larry Gene Shepherd and mother-in-law Carol Ann Jacobs.
He is survived by wife Susan Edith Mahuiki, son Tristin Kekoa Mahuiki, daughter Rachel Ann Kau‘inohea Mahuiki, brother Keli‘i Alapai, brother-in-law James Oliver Shepherd, sister Cheryl Alapa‘i, nephews and nieces Kaneala, Kalei, Kanoe, Ka‘iulani, James and Andryea, grandniece Chloe Alapa‘i, and numerous cousins, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, hanai sisters and brothers.
He worked for Kobayashi Trucking Company and was a musician.
Memorial services with ashes will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at North Shore Christian Church in Kilauea, located at Kauai Christian Academy School, 4000 Kilauea Road, starting at 11 a.m. with a pa‘ina to follow.
The family suggests casual or aloha attire, welcomes lei but requests that flowers be omitted.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Michele Deane Allen
Michele Deane Allen passed away on Sept. 29, 2019, at the age of 67. She was born on April 1, 1952, in California.
She was preceded in death by parents Dean and Ida Allen and brother Jeffrey Allen.
She is survived by sons Brandon (Adriana) Jebens of California, Todd Jebens of Kauai, daughter Erin (Kai) Hoff of Lawai, grandchildren Alaska Jebens, Nova Jebens, Jase Hoff, Dylan Hoff, Peyton Hoff and Cion Hoff.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
