Attack on ducks is cruel
To the person or persons who poisoned the ducks at Wailua Golf Course: SHAME ON YOU!
This happened at the back of green #10. I came upon this horrendous scene on Thursday morning. Some of the ducks were already dead and some were gasping their last breath.
These ducks are no harm to anybody. They do not attack or act mean in any way. They have been a pleasure to many a golfer, some of whom can take their mind off a bad day of golf to watch these cute birds.
There are many endangered native birds who visit this very same pond, ‘alae‘ula, nene and ae‘o, just to name a few. It would be devastating if they were poisoned as well.
This is cruelty to animals, which is against the law (711-1108.5). If you know about this horrible act on these helpless animals please contact the authorities. I know you can remain anonymous. We need to protect these friendly birds as well as our native treasures.

Salt-makers and the helicopter company
I’ve written before on this subject, and have been watching with great interest the issue of Maverick Helicopters making improvements on land near Hanapepe.
I am holding my breath on the recent developments surrounding the notice of violation and order to pay fines recently issued.
I understand Mr. Kawaoka from the Department of Health, state of Hawaii, confirmed by Kauai Councilmember Luke Evslin, that proper permits and environmental testing were not done before the improvements were made. I have also read that the planning director of Kauai has imposed a notice of violation and order to pay fines (up to $10,000 daily) on the helicopter company and have requested the buildings be removed. Thank you, Ka‘aina Hull.
My question is this — the helicopter company is appealing — what are Kauai state, county and local governments going to do? Is the helicopter company going to be able to dictate what laws, regulations, codes and ordinances are enforceable? Or is the government going to say enough is enough and enforce these laws? Is the state going to look into the lease and see if there is a breach of terms?
There are rules and regulations put into place for a very good reason. A company, whether big or small, is obliged to follow those rules and obtain the necessary permits. If they do not follow the requirements, and are called to task, they are also obliged to comply with the notice of violation.
Is anyone checking to see what type of pollution is getting into the water now?
I consider Kauai my second home — and love the culture and beauty of the island. It breaks my heart to know that the salt-makers, and Kauai culture, are under attack and having such trouble.

It could have simply been botulism- nature is also cruel
That’s terrible about the ducks and I am hoping it wasn’t the golf course crew who did it. Surely not, but then who? Anytime I see ducks flying or while I paddle on the Wailua River I feel privileged to get a glimpse of them since we really don’t have many ducks. Now we have less. And they died painfully.
