KAPAA — Kaikea Miyashiro pushed for a 10-yard touchdown with no time remaining on the game clock Saturday during the Kauai Pop Warner Football League games contested at the Bryan Baptiste Memorial Sports Park stadium.
The effort fell short, however, as the Kekaha Titans Mitey Mites dropped a 13-27 contest to the Lihue Raiders who scored all of their points in the first three periods.
Takazee Thomas ran for three touchdowns — a 55-yarder in the first period, a 61-yard punt return for score, and a 56-yarder in the third period — to lead the Lihue Raiders Mitey Mite victory. In the flurry of scores, Chase Kawakami booted the point-after following Thomas’ first score to give the Raiders an 8-0 bulge.
Soljah Kahale did the honors in the second period, pulling in a 9-yard scoring pass and gracing the score with a Point After Touchdown run for the 15-0 margin at the break.
Following Thomas’ pair of scores, Kekaha got on the board in the fourth quarter when Miyashiro broke open for a 51-yard scoring run, Keanu Kua doing the point-after run.
Kekaha Titans redeemed that loss in the PeeWee division match when Pihana Durant scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters, and Dayton Shimatsu was two-for-two in PAT boots for the 16-0 shutout over the Raider PeeWee team.
Durant broke a 0-0 stalemate in the second quarter with a 1-yard charge to the end zone with 2:59 showing in the half. Shimatsu booted his first of two PATs for the 8-0 Kekaha lead at the break.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Durant recovered a fumble and ran the ball back for the touchdown that came with 5:29 showing in the third period. Shimatsu graced that score with his second successful PAT kick.
During the Flag division play, Kapaa Eagles’ Idren Sardwa answered a 30-0 deficit in the final period by finding the hole to a 45-yard run into the end zone to prevent a shutout by the Hanapepe Colts, 30-6.
The Hanapepe Colts Flag team had earlier built up the lead behind two touchdowns scored by Koa Wong — a 40-yard play to open the scorebooks, and a 14-yard run. Keola Naka‘ahiki also added a pair of scores — a 40-yard run, and a 45-yarder to the Colts’ scoring tally. Easton Hew rounded out the scoring by pulling in a 12-yard scoring pass.
The KPWFL moves to the Hanapepe Stadium, Saturday starting with the Flag division playing at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Kekaha Titans Mitey Mites and PeeWees hosting the Kapaa Eagles starting at 10:30 a.m. Koloa hosts Lihue Raiders in the Mitey Mites and PeeWee divisions in the afternoon series starting at 1:30 p.m.
