KOLOA — Learn about the archaeology of the Koloa Field System and field systems on other neighbor islands at the Koloa Neighborhood Center on Thursday.
This free gathering features a presentation by cultural survey expert Hal Hammatt, and is part of the Koloa Community Association general membership meeting starting at 6:30 p.m.
The presentation will cover the research and documentation of Hal Hammatt and Francis Ching’s work that began in the 1970s. It looks at the way the Kanaka Maoli used gravitational design in stone auwai (waterways) to produce local and export food over 500 years ago.
Hammatt will also speak about recovery, preservation and rebuilding of these food-production systems.
