LIHUE — Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce vice president Randy Francisco was able to squeeze in the Lihue United Church of Christ Labor Day Breakfast after sending off the field of golfers in Wailua.
Mayor Derek Kawakami wedged the morning meal at the Lihue Parish Hall between events on his busy schedule.
“I grew up in this neighborhood,” Kawakami said. “I can’t miss this. Our house was just down the way from the church.”
This is the 41st year the church has hosted the Labor Day meal for members of the community that traveled from the Eastside and as far away as the Westside.
“I got to do this for 90 minutes,” said Dr. Monty Downs who entertained breakfast patrons with his guitar and specially-adapted harmonica. He was joined by other young church members and community volunteers in keeping diners content.
Some of the new changes for this year’s breakfast included moving the sausage cooking station to a tent outside the kitchen area, opening up more space for preparation of the baked goods and fresh fruits.
Another new facet is the addition of a rummage area where holiday icons for Halloween and beyond beckoned shoppers from within stacks of dishes and glassware.
Proceeds from this year’s breakfast benefits the Boys &Girls Clubs on Kauai as well as some being set aside for the maintenance of historical buildings on the church’s property as the church nears its 100th anniversary.
