LIHUE — The recent “Kauai College Prep Weekend” delivered as promised.
The free lecture and workshop educated students and parents on how to acquire financial resources to get into college cheaper and, once enrolled, how to become a successful college student.
“It was wonderful to join forces this year with the Kauai Board of Realtors and Debra Ching to create the Kauai College Prep Weekend,” said Susan Davis, president and founder of “The Bridge: Kauai to College.”
She praised Ching for showing what financial resources can be available for high school graduates.
“Our youth have a secret weapon: they help create the kind of diversity that college admissions officers are looking for,” Davis said.
The Bridge: Kauai to College is a nonprofit founded in 2016 that pairs adult mentors with high school students wanting to go to college.
“College Success is Possible,” hosted by The Bridge at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue, offered a complimentary breakfast, workshop and luncheon where professors from around the country came to donate their time to help high school kids succeed in college.
Together, Professor Robert Davis, Dr. Ayesha Nibbe, Professor Art Stipanovic, Dr. Susan Davis and the Rev. Dainard Spore shared their tips and experiences through workshops, role-playing and lectures.
“It was an amazing workshop. It helped give me more an idea of what college lectures would be like and also helpful tips on how to connect with my professor,” said one student.
Another guest observed, “Excellent speakers. It was good for students to hear from actual college professors from three different disciplines. The role-playing was both fun and informative.”
“This was our second college success workshop, something that The Bridge intends as an annual event,” said Davis said. “As they enter college, our Kauai keiki face a huge leap, culturally, socially and academically. We work with our mentoring pairs and through this public workshop to give them a running start.”
