Changes in lifestyle, diet necessary to protect environment
Changes in lifestyle, diet necessary to protect environment
“Climate Change Threatens World Food Supply” was the lead story in yesterday’s leading newspapers. It was prompted by the release of a summary report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, staffed by more than 100 experts from 52 countries.
The report details how climate change is threatening our world’s food and water supplies — turning arable land to desert, degrading soil, and raising the frequency of devastating weather conditions.
It concludes that avoiding wholesale starvation and mass migrations requires fundamental changes in current animal agriculture and land-management practices, which account for 23% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.
The conclusions of the IPCC report match closely those by Oxford University in 2017 and by Chatham House in 2015. A 2010 United Nations report blames animal agriculture for 19% of greenhouse gas emissions, 70% of freshwater use and 38% of land use. All reports recommend a massive shift to plant-based eating.
In an environmentally sustainable world, meat and dairy products in our diet must be replaced by vegetables, fruits and grains, just as fossil fuels are replaced by wind, solar and other pollution-free energy sources. Our next visit to the supermarket provides a superb starting point.
Leo Gushiken, Lihue
I am sure there will be eye rolls on your letter Leo but eating habits change is going to be THE issue in the not so far future. Just as electric cars and alternate energy sources are now. Of course people will fight it knife and fork even though we all know less beef in our diet is a good thing. Just like cigarettes big business will bring to bear all their lobbying and PR power to keep this next step in sustainability from happening. Once again money being the root of all evil. An idea that has not quite made it the forefront of the environmental movement, yet.
“Of course people will fight it knife and fork even though we all know less beef in our diet is a good thing.”
Says who, Doug? The epidemic of diabetes and cardio-vascular disease is from the idiotic “better eating” nonsense of high carb, low fat & protein propaganda. The climate change cr_p accompanying the anti-meat rants is utter lunacy and factually wrong.
You need to do some serious research because you are dead wrong.

RG,
You do know that Ivor Cummings is a chemical engineer not a doctor?
The other site won’t even tell you who’s behind it
No thanks!
Pete:
Much of the leading research into CVD, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance is being conducted by people like Ivor Cummings. If you listen to him or read his work you would see that he very often collaborates with cardiologists. Don’t close your mind to someone just because they are not an MD. Ivor is part of the Irish program that is promoting the CAC as one of the single most effective ways to determine your risk of CVD.
The burn fat, not sugar site is the work of Dr. Ted Naiman, who is a physician at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd8QFD5Ht18. You can search for his lectures especially with “insulin resistance” added to the search terms. We may not agree on much…but insulin resistance, glucose are far more important than the cholesterol hype.
BTW: Charlie is only half right (he correctly calls out sugar, but in error lumps meat into the equation)…Humans did not start eating grains and other cultivated carbohydrates until 10k years ago and have not fully evolved to utilize these foods. These are high glycemic foods and are responsible for the epidemic of insulin resistance, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Grains are especially bad.
Meats and fats however have been the primary diet of humans since they first appeared on earth…we are fully adapted to eating them.

Yea,…..right!
How about next week, you and this imaginary Charlie Chimknee character start your own Flat Earth or UFO Awaiters Association.
Aloha Kakou,
For those who believed in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Ferry, it has been an easy leap of Blind Faith to believe in ghost nutritional factoids (which are invented facts believed to be true because it appears in print) to allow you to believe in the false nutritional claims created by and brought to you by the (for huge profits) BEEF and DAIRY Industry.
You may need reading glasses, but for sure you do not need a microscope to see the fatty tissue in slaughtered and carved up animal flesh at the Supermarket or at other displays of food from animals.
Those “marbled” lines and swirls in that rib-eye or T-bone steak, etc., in cow meat or any cut of meat in cows, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, fish, or any animal really, this white substance, fat…GREASE, is well, let me finish…and those white dots in the hamburger meat, they are the same grease that’s found in the finer cuts of meat that has not hit the the meat grinder and meat blender, wherein your burger is probably a mixture of a dozen slaughtered (old worn out drugged and diseased) Dairy Cows. Who knows what diseases and drugs in them that these animals have when they are slaughtered.
When people think of “slaughtered”, many people think of Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, and wars in general. Do slaughter houses still use the sword or is it just a bullet to the head.
So when it comes to animals for food, volume of intake of the fats/grease, pound per pound, day after day, after month after year after the time accumulation of decades of all that grease going into, for the most part, going into the body’s water soluble arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels is definitely incompatible with Health as water and oil don’t mix. Any mechanic or food preparer knows that.
And while the body does produce bile in the liver (that emulsifies and breaks down fats in the food we eat), and stores the bile in the gall bladder, for secretion into the intestine in the presence of fat, so too, just like in modern Super Sized Dosages of sugar in pretty much every packaged canned and bottled food or drink sold in America, versus the body’s need to make insulin in the pancreas…for both the BILE needed for eating excessive animal fat, and the INSULIN needed for eating excessive sugar consumption (read the food warning labels called “ingredients”, many of those words you do not know are manufactured sugars making those foods addictively sweet), yes sadly, our liver and pancreas organs cannot make enough bile and insulin, so the body stores some of the excess animal fat/grease in our body’s water soluble blood e , and the accumulated build up over many decades of eating animal flesh is that that fat becomes the atherosclerosis or the actual hardening of the arteries, and the inevitable blood vessel blockage, or even breakage, that are the stroke in your brain, or the myocardial infarct, the heart attack. Google, look up on the internet “pictures of a fatty heart”…it’s ugly.
And the excess sugar which converts to fat in the body, loves to be lazy hanging around your tummy or butt, and some of that fat would get stuck in your meant to be water soluble blood vessels and accumulate over decades into blockages and broken blood vessels that result in brain strokes and heart attacks
You see humans not until the last few hundred years never had so much meat and sugar in their diet as today. Our bodies have been designed to adapt to our environment, but there has not been enough time to adapt to this era of modern environment where meat and sugar are sold on practically every street corner, and eaten at every meal. Bacon or sausages for breakfast, lunch an animal food sandwich, or salad with meat, and dinner with red meat, it’s meat meat meat, and beef jerky for a treat.
Our ability to digest and utilize animal meat as fat, and sugar from plants, comes from our ancestors adapting to their then environment over a period of as much as a hundred thousand years, not a mere few hundred years, which is how long ago the mass production of abundant meat and excess sugar has been around with modern and industrial food production…food from factories instead of farms or nature.
Along with meats and sugars and petrochemicals in and on our food has been a dramatic increase of chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heartache cancer, and vascular stroke disease, and Alzheimer’s, etc.
Now how can we .”speed describe” DAIRY…just think about dairy and how it has similarities such as meat, Dairy is loaded with fat and protein.
1. The FAT in dairy is incompatible with your water soluble blood vessels and causes over decades of time, and piggy backing over those years with the animals’ meat fats, and clogs up our water soluble blood vessels as well when you have enough fat deposits in your blood vessels to have a heart attack or stroke. And you can have many mini strokes and heart stacks that you won’t know about until you get the Big Whopper and you are hospitalized or dead.
2. The protein in dairy: milk, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream, etc., is made up of 80% of the protein with protein called Casein. In a few words Casein triggers cancer and tumors in the body. And when you eat the growth hormones in the beef, cow meat, those growth hormones help to grow your CASEIN fed tumors. Some people can have tumor(s) and they remain small enough that they are never known during life. Casein and growth hormones can accelerate tumor growth so that the tumors are problematic and interfere with your heath and your life.
We wonder how children can get cancer so young in life, see TV child cancer ads. Clearly there is indication that the people who drink the most milk, are children, and they be getting their cancer from the dairy they consume, urged by the Dairy Industry ads that say “milk builds strong bodies in 12 ways”, not all of which is true, but neglecting to mention the risk of cancer from the protein Casein is a bit negligent to say the least as to the children who get cancer and their saddened parents and family.
A young girl we know whose father had a large dairy farm, she had all the milk she could drink. She developed a tumor on one of her adrenal glands. The tumor caused the super elevated production of an adrenal gland hormone called Aldosterone. Aldosterone has some control over your blood pressure. Her blood pressure was 350 over 240, normal is 120 over 80. The doctors said she was ready to “explode”, convincing her parents to allow surgical removal of the tumor, which clearly saved her, if not her life. Clearly it would have been better to avoid the surgery, the enormously elevated blood pressure, the tumor, and the Cause if it was the dairy. Either way the wonderful doctors had no concern for the Cause…only the treatment. Removing the Cause would have eliminated the entire sequence of events
Another issue with dairy is that it produces mucus, and strands of mucus, like strands of snot from your nose, these mucus strands clog up you blood vessels as well. Sounds disgusting because it is disgusting. The things we eat and our lack of the knowledge to keep ourselves healthy during life and not be dependent on cancer causing drugs is also disgusting. Hopefully this bit of information is of some help.
But all this your physician is supposed to tell you about to prevent heart attacks and stroke. You see the word Physician means teacher, but they are just not making very many Physician teachers anymore, The doctors’ primary purpose now is to screen you after you have disease and prescribe you drugs made from petroleum oil, petrochemicals, which in themselves also cause cancer, well that’s your problem, stupid, you did not ask, and Dr. Prescription Pad is not there to prevent anything, They are there to mind the business of the petrochemical industry sales, see your endless TV ADS, in conjunction with your health insurance company.
Another incidence was a discussion with an M.D., who treated dementia and Alzheimer’s. He said dementia is like and umbrella and under that umbrella we’re many diseases of the brain, from Alzheimer’s to minor forgetfulness, but also disease like Parkinson’s.
When the doctor was asked how people could prevent these diseases, alluding to what was the cause of these brain diseases, the good doctor ignored discussing the cause as that was not in his “Playbook”, but he did say the successful treatment to these diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, that 1 in 9 people will get, is somewhere waiting in a test tube, as if that pill for that ill has not been discovered yet. In other words doctors are not trained to find the Cause and Prevention of Disease, but only to get gather the effects, signs, and symptoms, and name the Condition, and have a drug or surgical treatment$$ ready for the disease or condition. In some cases drugs and surgery save lives or reduce intractable pain, other times it’s ruination, worsening, and more drugs and surgery.
There is better, and we deserve better. $4Trillion Dollars a year spent on Disease Care would be better spent on finding the Cause and Preventing Disease. Proactive Health Care is better than treatments.
We deserve better…we deserve to know about our food…especially Beef and Dairy and so many others. The majority of foods today are non foods with chemicals…petrochemicals, and they are failing the public allowing more and more and more new diseases with more drugs sought to treat the diseases.
We deserve that through Natural Science we learn to stay healthy and active through 9 or 10 decade life span.
Thanks for reminding me I need to pick up ribeyes at costco
