HILO — A Hawaii man has pleaded guilty to more than two dozen charges resulting from double rape case, a report said.
Oran Charles Kita, 40, was faced with 27 charges including sexual assault, terroristic threatening, kidnapping and marijuana possession, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Saturday.
A then-19-year-old woman and her then-17-year-old friend were hiking near Piihonua Bridge in Hilo when Kita approached and offered to show them a waterfall. Kita then wielded a knife, tied up the women and assaulted them, court records said.
Kita was arrested in December 2015.
Kita will be sentenced to 20 years with credit for time served after being held in custody since his arrest, Hawaii County prosecutor Mitch Roth said.
In exchange for Kita’s guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to not seek extended terms of imprisonment or consecutive sentencing on the charges, which would have resulted in a life sentence and 365 years and 30 days in prison, respectively.
“This agreement came after conversations with the police, the victims and people on our team, so it was a well-thought-out agreement,” Roth said.
Kita was also wanted in an unrelated felony marijuana case since 2011, but prosecutors have agreed to drop those charges, records said.
Kita is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 27.
