LIHUE — Tina Albao, Kauai director of operations and development for the Boys &Girls Club, was only worrying about backpacks of school supplies for about a hundred youngsters Monday when the Kauai Opio and Keiki Orchestra performers hosted its first violin recital.
Tuesday morning, Albao’s prayers were answered when a group of motorcycle riders, including Ellsworth Fontes, president of the Rock &Roll Motorcycle Club, rumbled onto the Boys &Girls Club, Lihue Clubhouse with 100 backpacks of school supplies.
Fontes said this is the second year the motorcycle riders delivered backpacks of school supplies to the Boys &Girls Club.
“This was a project started by the Street Bikers United of Maui with Ron Ponzo as its president,” Fontes said. “That was about four, maybe five years ago. The Rock &Roll Motorcycle Club, both the Big Island and Maui chapters became involved, and we get a lot of help from our motorcycle brothers and sisters on the Neighbor Islands, too.”
Fontes was joined by local motorcycle clubs delivering the backpacks.
“These are for both boys and girls of different ages,” Fontes said. “The different ages need different things so we packed the backpacks so everyone would have something.”
Russell Haluapo, a Kauai motorcycle enthusiast, said motorcycle enthusiasts are no strangers to doing good for the community.
He said they have planned rides to benefit the Life’s Bridges program, the Kauai Special Olympics, and in December, a Keiki Toy Ride.
“It’s all for the community,” Haluapo said. “It’s for the keiki.”
