LIHUE — Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is asking everyone to conserve energy and practice voluntary load reductions as generation capacity is limited.
“Due to the island wide outage on Sunday, KIUC’s largest generator, Kapaia Power Station, is inoperable. Several other units at our Port Allen Generation Station are down due to either scheduled maintenance or repair issues, and the Wainiha hydros have been unavailable since yesterday’s outage,” according to a press release.
“Weather is also playing a factor; with the storm approaching, this will limit the productivity of our solar resources,” it said.
Rolling outages were scheduled last night from 11:30 p.m. to 12:20 a.m. affecting 5,900 members in Lawai, ʿAnini, Puhi, Kapahi and Princeville. This morning, roughly 10,000 members were affected in areas from Kekaha to Princeville during rolling outages between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
“KIUC will continue to utilize rolling outages as needed. We anticipate they will be utilized at least through Tuesday morning,” the release said.
“We appreciate our members’ cooperation to conserve power and their continued patience as we perform repairs to our system,” the release saie. “We will issue updates as new information becomes available and will provide a status update on the Kapaia generating unit later today.
