LIHUE — Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s “Summer Stars” program presents “Rising Stars Gala Showcase and Fundraiser” tonight at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. Doors open at 5:30. Enjoy dinner, homemade baked goods and a silent auction before the show starts at 6:30. Tickets are $10 at the door.
About 80 kids ages 8 to 15 participated in the six-week program that began in early June. Tonight’s gala will show off the acting, dancing and singing skills they’ve been working on.
They put together four, 15-minute plays, with each group coming up with their own music and dialogue. One of the fight scenes is very realistic, said Dolly Kanekuni, HCT president.
“You gasp because it looks like they’re really killing each other,” she said.
Kanekuni and HCT “Frozen, Jr.” Director Rebecca Hanson are impressed by the progress of the keiki.
“Over the moon,” Hanson added.
Trinity Kerwin is interning for both the morning and afternoon HCT “Summer Stars” programs. Among her many duties, she leads classes, helps with costumes and works with students on vocal techniques.
Kerwin grew up around theater, has been in HCT’s “School of Rock” and “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and is at home on stage or behind the scenes.
The 17-year-old Kauai High student will be in HCT’s After Dark production of “Chicago” next month.
