Glenn forever in our hearts
Glenn and Ruth (Mickens) have been our ohana for nearly 10 years. Ruth is from Sioux City, Iowa and has been my dear friend for so many years. Sometimes when we come to stay in our timeshare, we will stay in their 2nd home and spend days with them… I was sad when she called to tell me Glenn had passed, but when we were on Kauai the past couple of years, we knew his health was failing.
Ruth is one of my dearest friends and despite Glenn living to a ripe age of 88, I am truly sad for my friend at the loss of her husband. And Ruth being age 98 and taking care of him…. that is also another great feat!
Glenn and my husband both have a great love of the game. My husband LOVED to hear Glenn talk about his days in baseball with the Dodgers and his UCLA days … and they had their standing rivalry — Lakers vs Celtics … it was fun to see the sparkle in Glenn’s eyes when he would talk about his trips with the UCLA baseball teams. Ah yes, Glenn had a kind heart and we will miss him dearly.
I just read your article in TGI. You spoke so beautifully of our friend and wanted to let you know that a fellow friend appreciated your endearing article. Forever in our hearts, RIP Glenn.

Coach Mickens will be missed
I read your article this morning on the passing of Glenn Mickens. He was a special man.
I played baseball at UCLA from 1962 through 1967. He was an assistant coach to Head Coach Art Reichle. He was a great teacher of the game of baseball, motivator, and just a plain good friend. All the players who came into contact with Coach Mickens benefited from their association with him. Not only was he an exceptional coach but he was a master at playing the card game,”Hearts”. Great fun on long bus trips especially to play Arizona and Arizona State. I will miss him and always remember him as someone very special in my life.
Thanks for writing the article.
P.S. Here always referred to himself as Kauai’s official “nitpicker.”
