Bertha Jean Souza De Costa
Bertha Jean Souza De Costa of Makaweli passed away on June 16, 2019, at the age of 83.
Born in Koloa on July 10, 1935, she was retired from Big Save Inc.
She was preceded in death by parents Frank and Daisy Souza, husband Vincent De Costa, son Michael Alan De Costa and brother Albert Souza.
She is survived by daughter Theresa Christine De Costa Koki of Makaweli, sons Vincent James (Gerlinda) De Costa of Lawai, Damien Mitchell De Costa Sr. of Kalaheo and Craig Anthony De Costa of Lihue, grandchildren Keola James (Courtney Brown) De Costa, Vincent Kapono (Kathlen Lee) De Costa, Alanna Kuulei (Taniela Tuakoi) De Costa, Clifton Ikaika De Costa, Nicole Nalani De Costa, Damien Mitchell De Costa Jr., Sheree Chiemi (Preston) McCormack, Ciarra Kimi (J. Michael Scovel) Koki, Bronson Joel Shigeshi (Beverly) Koki, Holden James Akira (Amber Matsuyoshi) Koki, step-grandchild Kylan John Napualani (Monesa Malapira) Holt, 20 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, July 13, at Sacred Heart of Jesus &Mary Catholic Church in Waimea, with visitation is at 8:30 a.m. and Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary Kamalu Paikai Medeiros
Mary Kamalu Paikai Medeiros passed away on May 26, 2019 on Kauai.
She was born on Dec. 19, 1929 in Honolulu, and was a tour guide driver.
She was preceded in death by parents Ebenezer and Mabel Paikai, husband Gilbert Medeiros, son Joseph Medeiros, grandson Kalama Nobriga, brothers Ebenezer “Biggie” Paikai, James Paikai and Joe Paikai, and sisters May Ho, Miriam Makaena and Shirley Hyman.
She is survived by sons Gilbert (Clarita) Medeiros, Antone “Max” (Renee) Medeiros and Hoburn Medeiros, daughters Elizabeth “Lee” (Jeff) Albao, Gail (Greg) Norbriga and Mary (John) Adviento, stepbrother George Mahelona, stepsister Mamo Mahelona, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 13, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, with visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at a later date.
The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.
Leonard Freitas
Leonard Freitas, 67, of Koloa, passed away in his home on June 19, 2019. He was born in Lihue on March 6, 1952, to Helen and Theodore Freitas.
He was preceded in death by wife Judy Freitas, his parents, brothers Dennis and Damien, and two grandchildren, Kalena Freitas and Gerry Rayray Jr.
He is survived by children Kitty Freitas of Lihue, Tracy (Mike Huffman) Freitas of Missouri, Travis (Christina) Freitas of California, Brandon and Bryson Freitas of Arizona, grandchildren Ashley Rayray, Jasmine Freitas, Savannah McNaughton, Jayden Celebrado and Noelani Panes, great-grandchildren Brylon Ash, Avaleyne Sutphin and Lillianne Sutphin, and sister Arlene (George) Whitten of Koloa.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Grove Farm. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, working on his bikes, cars, and cruising around the island.
Everyone who knew Leonard knew him as compassionate, fun-loving and always ready with a joke to make others laugh. He was always willing to give anyone his time and was never one to shy away from a good conversation.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday July 13th at St. Raphael Church in Koloa. Visitation with family from 9am-10am, with the service starting at 10am.
Burial will be at St. Raphael Cemetery with a lunch reception to follow held in the Church Hall.
Edward L. ‘Eddie’ Sarita
Edward L. “Eddie” Sarita passed away on July 2, 2019, at Straub Medical Center on Oahu.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1942.
He was retired as the manager of the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
He was preceded in death by parents Gaudencio and Salome Sarita and brother-in-law Gary Yoshida.
He is survived by wife Charlene Sarita, daughter Kimberly (Walter) Sarita-Paresa, brothers Stephen Sarita and Dennis Sarita, and sister Fay Yoshida.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, July 24, at Immaculate Conception Church, with visitation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Mass to follow at 10 a.m.
