HILO, Hawaii — The owners of a Hawaii city lot have been ordered to remove unauthorized structures at a homeless encampment on the property.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that Hawaii County issued a complaint in mid-June to two owners of the property behind a music store and furniture store in downtown Hilo on the Big Island.
A camp resident says about a dozen people live in the fenced-off collection of tents and tarps.
A county attorney says property co-owners Jerilyn Rose and Michael Ravenswing have failed to respond.
The Big Island residents have a month to remove the structures before the county seeks permission in civil court to do the removal work and bill the owners.
The attorney says the structures have accrued more than $34,000 in fines as of mid-April.
