LIHUE — The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has eyes on Hurricane Barbara, even though it hasn’t yet crossed into the waters they monitor.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said Tuesday they’re watching the storm, which intensified to a Category 4 hurricane Tuesday morning.
Forecasters expect Hurricane Barbara to weaken by Wednesday and pass into the Central Pacific sometime Saturday.
As of Tuesday, it was about 1,100 miles from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; tracking west-northwest through the Eastern Pacific.
Forecasts show the storm passing near Hawaii next week, but as a much weaker system. NWS forecasters say they’ll know more about Barbara’s path in the coming days as it nears the Central Pacific.
