MEXICO CITY — A storm far off Mexico’s southern coast strengthened into the second hurricane of the eastern Pacific season Monday.
But the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Barbara was heading out into the Pacific and posed no threat to land.
The storm was centered about 970 miles (1,560 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula and was heading west at 16 mph (26 kph).
The hurricane center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and could become a major hurricane on Tuesday.
