KOLOA — A portion Kaumualii Highway in the vicinity of Maluhia Road in Koloa was closed in both directions for more than an hour on Sunday, following a three-vehicle crash.
Four people sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and were treated by responding medics while in transport to Wilcox Hospital.
Police responded to the incident at approximately 3:10 p.m. According to a preliminary investigation, a Nissan SUV traveling eastbound on Kaumualii Highway apparently lost control, crossed the center line, and broadsided a westbound Toyota Tacoma. Because of the initial collision, a westbound Chevy SUV rear ended the Toyota Tacoma.
Kauai Police closed a portion of Kaumualii Highway from approximately 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. to allow emergency personnel to rescue the drivers from their vehicles. Westbound traffic was diverted onto Maluhia Road, while eastbound traffic was diverted onto Omao Road.
Heavy rain and inclement weather appear to have been factors in the crash. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
