One of the priceless things about the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital beach outings (Happy birthday, Efrenia Pagulayan of Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital!) is the appearance of Gary Smith and the Kilauea Social Club (gonna have to settle for postage-stamp-sized photo here), who volunteers with entertainment that everyone can enjoy! Another is how farm-to-table dining prepared by chef Jessica Fernandez and Jason Flores with help from Brian Kameenui can be so beach-appropriate as the aroma of the specially-prepared Makaweli Beef patties wafted throughout the pavilion at Lydgate Park.

Kudos to Josie Pablo, Elsie Bayot and all the volunteers (including the Kauai Community College nursing program!) for making this event happen! And, it’s not over yet, as Josie said they’ll be at the Mayor-a-thon Saturday (registration is from 6:30 a.m. at the Kapaa Beach Park!) with Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. How early do those KVMH people have to get up?
Kamakai the inflatable, nearly-life-sized whale will be at the Princeville Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with Jean Souza and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, Christa McLeod (that 35-foot map is pretty impressive, too!), and the Surfrider Foundation people. The public libraries’ free summer reading program is fully ramped up!
OK, time to go check out the craft fair at the Kauai Marriott Resort &Beach Club (it runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today!) benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network, and according to Sherri Sanchez Holcomb, there should be those bento and other local grinds available.
