WAILUA — Patti Ornellas of the American Cancer Society Kauai unit could not be present when the first ball kicked off Saturday at the Kauai Island Ladies Adult Soccer seventh annual breast cancer awareness soccer event at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park in Wailua.
“Emily Medeiros does a great job with the event,” said Ornellas, who was working at the 12th annual Summer Kids Fest presented by the Hawaii Pacific Health and Wilcox Health.
“I sent out the education material, and Emily always does a good job presenting.”
Medeiros recruited nurse Danielle Doo, one of the players, to give a brief presentation on breast cancer before an audience of about three dozen players that included youth up to adult lady soccer players, including college students who have returned home for the summer break.
Proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society, Kauai. Everything we make here stays on Kauai,” Medeiros said. “We thank you for your help, and thank you to Duke’s Kauai, and Keoki’s Paradise for the event sponsorship.”
The group of three dozen players were divided to form four teams — pink, purple, green and blue — playing through the remaining daylight hours in a round-robin format with Sal and Marti Aggi leading the officiating duties on the two fields.
The next major ACS function is the East and North Shore Kauai Relay For Life on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Kapaa Beach Park.
The ACS is accepting team registrations, and individual contributions are welcome. It has a goal of raising $10,000.
