KAILUA — Hawaii firefighters have recovered the body of a man believed to be a missing swimmer.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday that the body found on the shore at Kailua Bay on Oahu Sunday matches the description of the person who disappeared Friday.
The man was not immediately identified, but is believed to be a U.S. Marine.
Officials say firefighters responded at 5:30 a.m. after a passerby discovered the body.
Officials say witnesses reported the man and two women went into the ocean around 5:30 p.m. Friday and were seen in distress.
A couple on surfboards rescued the women about 40 yards offshore, but the man was lost beneath the waves.
Officials say the search Saturday morning was interrupted when at least one shark was observed. The search resumed Saturday afternoon.
