LIHUE — The County of Kauai real property tax Board of Review has seen a sharp increase in the number of property assessment review appeals that have been submitted this year.
So far, 254 assessment appeals have been submitted to the board, an increase of 139 from 115 appeals in 2018.
Of those filed this year, 252 remain under active status, with one being withdrawn and another being deemed invalid.
In 2018, the board settled 45 of the 115 appeals, with 28 sustained, nine reduced, 15 withdrawn, one increased, and 16 still active.
In 2017, there were 100 property assessment appeals. Of those, 23 were settled, 47 sustained, six reduced, 14 withdrawn and one deemed invalid. There are nine active appeals from 2017 that the Board of Review is considering.
In the three years combined, 469 appeals have been filed with the board, with 15 appeals resulting in a reduction of the appraisal and 75 sustained. Sixty-eight have been settled and 277 are still active.
