HANALEI — High levels of bacteria have been detected by the state Department of Health in Hanalei Bay, according to an advisory the entity sent out Wednesday.
But, they’re not the only entity testing the water quality on Kauai and aren’t the only ones that have been warning of high bacteria counts in some areas.
DOH reported record levels of 222 parts per 100 mL of water that were detected during routine beach monitoring on Wednesday — results that exceed the threshold level of 130 enterococci per 100 mL.
“The advisory for this beach is posted because testing for enterococci indicate that potentially harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, or parasites may be present in the water,” the advisory states. “Swimming at beaches with pollution in the water may make you ill.”
The beach has been posted with signs that alert the public of the high levels of bacteria and will remain until samples no longer exceed the state’s threshold. The testing area is near the Hanalei Pier.
Surfrider Kauai’s Blue Water Task Force sampled the water during their monthly testing on May 11 around the island. They sample the surf at Pine Trees in Hanalei Bay and on May 11 returned results of 10 parts per 100 mL, below the state standards for safety.
We’ve known for some time now that Hanalei Bay is polluted and the probable cause is bacteria from fecal material seeping into the Hanalei River from broken septic systems and animal waste. It’s time to pinpoint the locations of the bacteria sources and eliminate them. A little initiative from the Mayor’s Office would be helpful.
Is this due to runoff from heavy rains and cesspools? With Black Pot about to reopen it would be great to enjoy the area with confidence of not getting sick.
