The Kauai Interscholastic Federation had a contingent of players compete in the 2019 HMSA Tennis Championships last week at the Mauna Lani Sports &Fitness Club in Waimea, Big Island.
The league winners and runner-ups from the KIF state qualifying tournament in late April at Kauai Community College earned entry in the state tournament.
None from the KIF, though, made it to day two of the three-day tournament.
KIF boys singles champion Sasha Rovinsky of Island School won his opening round match Thursday against Baldwin High School’s Aidan Kinoshita, 6-4, 7-5. In the next round, Rovinsky was eliminated by No. 1 seed and eventual boys singles winner Ryo Minakata of Hawaii Prep, 6-0, 6-0.
Runner-up Kai Villanueva from Kauai High School lost in the opening round against No. 8 seed Andrew Chiang of Mid-Pacific, 6-0, 6-1.
Minakata defeated No. 4 Hobbes Wilstead of Kihei High School in the boys singles championship match, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Waimea High School’s Breicen Medina and Fred Ryl Adella, who won the KIF boys doubles championship, lost in the opening round to Hawaii Prep’s Zane Willman and Noah Henderson, 6-0, 6-0.
Kauai High’s Trevor Carbonel and Micah Matsunaga won their opening round match at states against Molokai’s Gabriel Kaahanui and Robert Mawae, 6-1, 6-2. The Red Raiders team then lost in the second round to No. 3 seed Genki Kadomatsu and Andrew Somerville from Iolani, 6-1, 6-0.
Iolani’s Robert Chang and Scott Yamamoto beat Punahou’s Kailuhia Lam and Cade Fujitani in the boys doubles final, 7-6 (9), 6-4.
In the girls singles bracket, KIF winner Miya Reese of Kauai High lost in the opening round to Kalani High School’s Kayli Higa, 6-1, 6-3.
KIF runner-up Sydney Nice of Kapaa High School, too, lost in the first round to Mililani’s Richelle Suzuki, 6-2, 6-2.
Kihei’s Jessalyn Lopez defeated Waiakea’s Maile Brihante in the girls singles final, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Kauai High’s Tia Fulks and Anna Burkman, the KIF girls doubles winning team, beat Konawaena’s Megan Baguso and Caileen Teramoto in the first round at states, 6-2, 6-1. Fulks and Burkman then lost to Mid-Pacific’s Emiko Yoshikawa and Kylie Canubida in the next round, 6-1, 6-4.
KIF runner-up team Hokulani Iseri and Katherine O’Neill of Kauai High also advanced to the second round, beating Maui’s Eric Gumbuc and Jenna Payba, 7-5, 4-6 (4). Iseri and O’Neill then lost to Iolani’s Gabriela Siaosi and Mari Kwee in the next round, 6-0, 7-6 (3).
Punahou’s Alexis Matsunaga and Megan Flores won the girls doubles title, beating Jacqueline Oneill and Cosette Wu also of Punahou in the championship match, 6-3, 6-4.
