Kauai High School’s girls golf team placed seventh out of 10 teams at the 2019 David S. Ishii Foundation Girls Golf Championships. The two-day tournament wrapped up Wednesday at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course in Waimea, Big Island.
Kauai, representing the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, collectively shot an 82-over-par 514 (258-256).
Waiakea High School of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation won the team championship with a score of 26-over-par 458 (223-235). Punahou School of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu was second with 36-over-par 468 (236-232), and Mid-Pacific Institute of the ILH was third with 38-over-par 470 (232-238)
Taryn Taguma was Kauai High’s best golfer of the competition. Taguma, a senior, ended 18-over-par 162 (80-82) and placed 27th on the individual leaderboard out of 66 golfers.
Kauai’s Jessica Hreljac was 31-over-par 175 (90-85) and placed 48th. Tyra Oshiro was 33-over-par 177 (88-89). Keesha Brown was 56-over-par 200 (96-104) and placed 63rd. Sabrina Murphy was 60-over-par 204 (106-98) and placed 64th.
Leilehua High School freshman Leia Chung won the individual championship, shooting a 1-over-par 145 (72-73). Moanalua’s Tagirilani Luafalealo was second with 2-over-par 146 (72-74), and Waiakea’s Lacey Uchida was third with 3-over-par 147 (75-72).
The boys state tournament begins today at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. Kauai High’s team members are Mosiah Bautista, Jayson Serrano, Jaydon Kyono, Christian Ganir and Braeden Yokoyama. Also representing the KIF as individualists are Island School’s Niki Upson and James Pratt and Kapaa High School’s Kekoa Eisenhour.
