LIHUE — The county has officially entered into the process of creating a budget for fiscal year 2019-20 with the first of four public hearings Wednesday evening at the Historic County Building.
The public hearing was held at 5 p.m. to give a chance for members of the public to testify who might not be able to make the public comment period of the hearings scheduled for May 10, 13 and 14, all starting at 9 a.m. and running until 4:30 p.m. daily. The May 13 and 14 meetings will be held if deemed necessary by the Committee of the Whole Chair.
Public testimony will be taken at the beginning of each of the meetings.
At the meeting Wednesday night, five of the seven council members were in attendance, with one member of the public offering testimony on open spaces. Councilmembers Arthur Brun and Vice Chair Ross Kagawa were not in attendance, leaving a quorum of Felicia Cowden, Chair Arryl Kaneshiro, Mason Chock, Luke Evslin and KipuKai Kuali‘i.
Kaneshiro said the Friday, May 10 meeting will be the “decision-making hearing,” and encouraged all of the councilmembers to be in attendance for the important meeting, also offering the public their right to speak at the beginning of the hearing.
