Hawaii Children’s Theatre announced the productions scheduled for 2019, beginning with the performing arts education program, “Summer Stars.”
Summer Stars’ 2019 morning program presents the annual Rising Stars Showcase Gala and Fundraiser on Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m., with a silent auction starting at 5:30 pm. at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
The keiki will present an evening of song, dance and original 15-minute plays.
Summer Stars’ 2019 afternoon kids will present Disney’s “Frozen Jr.”, a Hawaii premiere. Directed by Rebecca Hanson, this is a story of true love and acceptance between sisters, and “Frozen Jr.” expands upon the emotional relationship and journey between princesses Anna and Elsa.
When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and the powerful bond of sisterhood. With a cast of characters and loaded with magic, adventure and plenty of humor, “Frozen Jr.” is sure to thaw even the coldest hearts. It will be staged Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 at 4 p.m. at the convention hall.
“HCT After Dark” presents the Tony award-winning musical, “Chicago”, directed by Cher Ellwood. In roaring ‘20s Chicago, chorus girl Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap — until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie.
Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American dream of fame, fortune and acquittal.
This show is rated PG-13. Auditions for “Chicago” will be Monday to Sunday, May 13 to 19, at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse. “Chicago” will stage at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse between Thursday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 18, Thursdays to Sundays at 7 p.m.
Finally, HCT has selected the Tony award-winning musical, Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical,” as its big fall show this year, and auditions for ages 8 and up will be in mid-August. This will be a Hawaii premiere. “Matilda” is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. “Matilda” will be directed and choreographed by Carol Culver and will open at convention hall on Nov. 15 and run for three weekends with nine public performances and school performances.
