WAIMEA — Kauai police are investigating an unattended death after a man was found dead on the cliffside of Waimea Canyon Drive Tuesday afternoon.
About 6 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to Waimea Canyon Drive, in the vicinity of mile marker 5.5, where a bystander who was scouting the area for goats observed a body about 200 feet below the cliff.
Due to the dangerous terrain and pending nightfall, emergency personnel were unable to gain access to the area that day.
On Wednesday morning, personnel from the Kauai Fire Department and Kauai Police Department began a body-recovery operation. About 12:15 p.m., firefighters from the Waimea fire station, Lihue rescue personnel, and a battalion chief initiated a high-angle rope rescue. Rescuers recovered the man’s body about 4 p.m., and with assistance from the KFD helicopter, his body was taken to a nearby landing zone.
An autopsy is scheduled to identify the man and determine the cause of his death.
The incident remains under police investigation.
Anyone with information on the man’s identity or this incident is urged to call Bryson Ponce, KPD assistant chief of the Investigative Services Bureau, 241-1681, or dispatch at 241-1711. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kauai at 246-8300.
Suicide. Not anybody you know. Westside.
Sometimes those goats will attack and buck you off the cliff if you don’t watch out.
So what’s the 411 on this case? Seems suspicious.
