HILO — A waste transfer station on the Big Island was shut down for nearly an hour last week after an explosive device was found.
Police say a grenade was discovered in front of a dumpster at the Hilo station, causing the facility to be evacuated Thursday afternoon.
Authorities say the grenade was nonfunctioning and did not have the ability to detonate.
Police say it’s unclear how the device ended up at the facility.
