Keapana swinging bridge
Does the county have plans to repair the damage caused to this bridge by the recent heavy rains and flooding?
After the April 2018 rain event, the county requested funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for repairs to the Keapana swinging bridge. FEMA denied the request, and the county is currently looking into other alternatives.
‘Opaeka‘a bridge and
Pu‘u‘opae bridge repairs
What is the current timeframe for completion of the repairs to these bridges? What is the cause for the delay in repairing these bridges?
As previously announced, the replacement of Pu‘u‘opae bridge was estimated to last through June 2019, and June remains the opening deadline for the contractor. However, based on the current progress on the bridge construction, it appears that the bridge may open early, sometime in May 2019.
Earlier this month, the notice to proceed was issued to the contractor for the rehabilitation of ‘Opaeka‘a bridge. For the next several weeks the contractor will be issuing submittals, preparing to mobilize, and procuring the long-lead items for construction. At this time, a detailed schedule has not been developed since the NTP was just issued. However, the anticipated closure date for reconstruction is July 2019, after Pu‘u‘opae bridge has reopened. Press releases and other announcements will be made prior to the closure.
After Pu‘u‘opae bridge closed for construction in October 2018, there have been no delays that have resulted in a delayed reopening of the bridge. ‘Opaeka‘a bridge has been delayed due to the processes necessary for using federal funds for 80 percent of the bridge reconstruction cost.
