WAILUKU, Hawaii — A former girls basketball coach on Maui has pleaded not guilty to charges he had an inappropriate relationship with an underage athlete.
Jonathan Furtado pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a Maui courtroom to 17 counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of second-degree sexual assault, Hawaii News Now reported Thursday.
The 37-year-old was suspended in March 2018 from the Seabury Hall school, according to the station, which reported that officials at the private school for grades 6-12 in Makawao said Furtado may have had an inappropriate relationship with a female athlete who was not a student there.
Furtado did not commit the crimes of which he is accused, according to his lawyer.
“I think the public will know that he didn’t do anything that he’s accused of by her or anyone else,” defense attorney Michael Green said Wednesday.
Furtado’s trial is scheduled for June 3. He is currently free after posting a $1 million bail bond, according to court records.
