HONOLULU — Hawaii’s state salary commission has recommended a series of annual pay raises for state legislators beginning in 2021.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday that some leading lawmakers support the commission’s recommendation to boost all legislators’ pay by 10 percent beginning in 2021, with additional increases through 2024.
The newspaper reports that 74 members of the state House and Senate would receive increases from their current annual pay of $62,604 up to $74,160 beginning Jan. 1, 2024.
The commission’s plan calls for the Senate president and House speaker to receive larger increases, from $70,104 to $83,052 in 2024, while the governor’s salary would increase from its current $158,700 to $189,480 in 2024.
The newspaper reports that under a 2006 law, the raises will automatically take effect unless rejected by lawmakers.
