HONOLULU — The head of the Hawaiian Humane Society is stepping down amid criticism of her leadership and handling of the organization’s euthanasia policies.
The Hawaiian Humane Society said Monday that President and CEO Lisa Fowler will leave April 30 for “personal reasons” after serving as the head of the animal protection agency on Oahu since late 2017.
The society says board Chairman Bob Armstrong will serve as interim CEO. Armstrong says in a letter to supporters that a national search will be conducted for Fowler’s replacement.
Critics including the groups Animal Rights Hawaii and People for Animals First say Fowler mistreated workers who tried to save animals from euthanasia and that that society has put down animals with treatable conditions.
Armstrong says “no evidence of wrongdoing” has been found.
