KOKEE — Hui o Laka hosted a workday Saturday in honor of the late Marsha Erikson, former director of Kokee Museum, in Kokee State Park.
Friends of Erickson and friends of the forest spent the morning weeding to honor the former director’s many contributions to the park and the museum.
Memories were shared amid the misty rain as clipping, digging and invasive plant removal took place. Native plants such as ‘ohe‘ohe, naupaka kuahiwi, pilo, a‘ali‘i and loulu were liberated from miles of honeysuckle and thorny Florida blackberry vines to create a space Erickson would be proud of.
Native plants were put in the ground and edging put in place to protect them, creating a serene area of reflection. Two commemorative benches that are on their way from the mainland will be placed there.
Another workday will be scheduled for their placement, and anyone interested in participating should call Kokee Museum at 335-9975.
Hui o Laka extends a warm mahalo to everyone who participated, and to Kokee Resource Conservation Program and Kauai Nursery &Landscaping for donating native plants for the planting beds.
