HONOLULU — Honolulu officials have agreed to pay $5.25 million to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of a firefighter who died after he was injured in a training exercise.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday that the city and attorneys for the family of Cliff Rigsbee notified the court earlier this month that they had reached a settlement to the negligence and wrongful death suit.
The Honolulu medical examiner determined the 63-year-old firefighter died from blunt force injury to his head and neck following the June 2016 training.
Rigsbee was on a sled being towed by a water rescue craft off Honolulu when he went through a series of tall waves.
Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves says he hopes the settlement brings closure to Rigsbee’s family, the department and the community.

Was the job he was doing at the time an important activity? Including all of us. Where is the money coming from? Taxpayer’s money. We’re giving the wife some money. Or the insurance is covering it. Right? I hate to spoil it for her, but I don’t care about your husband. So that should say some thing about your money.
