KAILUA-KONA — A nonprofit group has launched plans to construct a West Hawaii Community Veterans Center on the Big Island.
West Hawaii Today reports that the West Hawaii Veterans Council Inc. hopes to begin the first phase of construction in 2021.
The group says the facility would provide veterans, veterans groups and the community with much-needed gathering space.
Planners say they hope to build the center on state land in North Kona and that a draft environmental assessment released in late February found no significant impact.
The group says it is seeking $2 million in funding for fiscal year 2019-20 and an additional $2 million in fiscal year 2020-21 to complete the first phase.
The newspaper reports that 16,000-17,000 veterans live on the Big Island.
