Da Shadow: Kealia and Kaehulua roads
• Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from “The Shadow” radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Kealia Road
Near the intersection of Kealia Road and Kuhio Highway there are exposed railroad tracks that are a safety hazard. Does the county have plans to pave over the exposed railroad tracks?
The County of Kauai is addressing these maintenance issues.
Kaehulua Road
What are the county’s plans for addressing the overgrown trees on this road? Does the county have plans to add reflectors or other safety improvements on the road’s blind curves?
The county will work with private property owners to address trees that may be overgrown on the road. Additionally, County of Kauai crews recently cut brush on the shoulders of this road. With less than 500 vehicles per day, based on a count that the County of Kauai conducted in 2015, additional traffic-control devices are not warranted on this road.
