LIHUE — The Girl Scout Cookies are here, and will go on sale at locations around the island starting today, said Angela Hoover, the Kauai Girl Scout coordinator Thursday at the Kauai Veterans Center.
“This year, we have 2,350 cases of cookies that were delivered by Royal Hawaiian Movers,” said Hoover. “Nine of the Girl Scout troops are picking up their orders at the Kauai Veterans Center. We also had a truck deliver cookies to the Girl Scout office in Lihue where the after school Scouts will be picking up their orders.”
Among the troops picking up cookies, Girl Scout Troop 823 with leader Teresa Caires Nero had the biggest order at 7,634 boxes, or 632 cases.
In addition to delivering the pre-sale orders from the 30 Girl Scouts in the troop, Caires Nero said they start market sales this weekend at the Times Super Market in Lihue, and at the Safeway store in Hokulei Village, Waipouli.
Ahead of the cookie sales, Caires Nero said the troop will be delivering 21 Love Bags for Foster Children for both boys and girls this afternoon to the state’s Department of Human Services Child Welfare Services Section.
“This was a Take Action project for the Junior Scouts,” Caires Nero said. “But all of the troop helped because the project gives back to the community. We’re doing the project ahead of selling cookies because proceeds from cookie sales fund projects that do good for the community.”
Hoover said the Cookie Finder app on the Girl Scout website will help shoppers find times, dates and locations of market sales.
“We’ll be at the Hanapepe art walk for the next two weekends, starting Friday,” said Ray Gampon, Troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 2150 in Kalaheo. “Our big news is Lappert’s Ice Cream and Coffee getting a big order of Thin Mints for use in creating an ice cream using Girl Scout Cookies. We deliver the cookies Friday so you’ll just have to watch to see when the ice cream becomes available.”
Gampon said the troop will also be at The Kauai Culinary Market on Wednesday, March 6, to sell cookies.
“The special feature at The Shops at Kukuiula is that on March 6, Merriman’s will be doing the chef’s demo at the market using Girl Scout Cookies,” Gampon said. “There will be recipes available, and the Troop will be there to fill the cookie requirements.”
Emily Morden, a first-year Troop 2150 Scout selling cookies, said she was lucky to have a big family that bought a lot of cookies.
“It was pretty easy,” Morden said. “I even sold cookies online.”
This year’s Girl Scout Cookie selection includes S’mores, Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles and Toffee-tastic.
