In a somewhat out-of-character move, Kauai Concert Association will host its first drag performer on Tuesday, February 19, at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
“This is a surprising direction for us,” said Jason Blake, president of KCA. “KCA traditionally presents classical and jazz music. My husband Philip and I saw La Voix headline on a cruise last year. She sings live and is incredibly funny in a way only the Brits are. I asked her if she’d be interested in performing in Hawaii and she said, “Sure!” I thought it would be a hard sell to KCA’s conservative board of directors. What was great was how it was unanimously and enthusiastically embraced!”
“La Voix” is a British singer and comedian. For more than a decade, La Voix has toured continuously and headlined on many cruise ships. Her stage show includes live singing, incredible musicians led by her musical director Brian Nash of New York, PG-13 humor and fabulous gowns.
“Love the attitude! I like you,” said the notoriously curmudgeonly Simon Cowell in the semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent. Cowell is the producer of American Idol, America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent and more.
Blake continued, “Kauai has embraced drag in a fun way. In October of 2017, there was Drag Spooktacular at Koloa Landing, which featured Honolulu drag queens lip syncing and dancing—more than 300 people attended. There’s a monthly drag show at the Anahola Marketplace that is always at capacity. DMD Productions hosted a drag pageant in October of 2018 at Kauai Beach Resort, which featured local Kauai drag queens—close to 300 showed up for that, too. We’re excited to see what happens when we bring someone who’s been doing this professionally for more than a decade to spice up the entertainment scene on Kauai. We’re hoping to sell out the event!”
La Voix will perform on Kauai for one night only Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the KCC Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
Due to some bawdy, event is considered PG-13. Tickets can be purchased online at www.kauai-concert.org or by calling 808-245-SING (7464). There’s a limited availability reception after the show for $20 per person. Advance purchase is recommended for both the show and the reception as both are more than half sold-out.
