The Bernice Hundley Gym welcomed 2019 with the return of Michael Drake (he had a nice reunion with Marlene Moises, who retired from the county’s Finance Department Driver Licensing division) and his ohana (Lyah Kama Drake was stocking up on the plate lunches for dinner!) during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games Thursday night. The question is how do you make barrels sound so good as Tahitian drums?

Kapaa High Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves switched places with teacher Calvin Paleka to take in the basketball games, and athletic trainer Sam Henriques could shed her layered look since the game was inside.
Kudos to Michael Linnell, and coaches Christian Domingues and Ryan dela Pena on the work setting up for the annual (it’s going to be the seventh one!) Martin Luther King baseball tournament at Kalawai Park in Kalaheo starting Jan. 19 and running through Jan. 21. This should be a lot of fun and excitement, with more than 20 teams including six from off-island.
