Wall wouldn’t stand test of time
Wall wouldn’t stand test of time
In response to Michael Newgent’s letter (TGI, Jan. 2), Who’s advocating an ‘open door’ policy along our country’s borders? Republicans and Democrats alike, the president notwithstanding, want to see a comprehensive, sensible and humane immigration policy, which doesn’t include the overpriced and ultimately ineffectual wall that Trump continually rants about.
Don’t take it from me. Look at what most experts who do security for a living say: People will always be able to figure out ways to breach a physical wall, no matter how high it is or what it’s made of, not to mention the profound environmental and logistical problems it would create for both humans and animals living along the border.
The only good thing about building a wall would be the opportunity it would create for some future political leader to become a huge hero by tearing the thing down.
Andy Johnston, Kalaheo
well said, Andy! Happy New Year.
Fox News had three of the U S Border Patrol leaders on yesterday. They each said the existing southern border areas that have walls demonstrate that they do work, and that they are much needed in areas where none exist. Based on: “Don’t take it from me. Look at what most experts who do security for a living say” we should recognize walls are useful to those who manage our southern border.
No Bob, what fox presented was three “border patrol leaders” whose comments supported a wall. Those are their opinions. The statement ” Mexico will pay for the wall” is stated as a fact by trump. Unless he was lying of course. You see Bob that you are confusing opinion with fact.
Also Bob, what is a “border patrol leader?” Sounds very prestigious in itself. Kind of like ” playground monitor.”
George,
You asked: what is a “border patrol leader?” Sounds very prestigious in itself. Kind of like ” playground monitor.”
Brandon Judd is President of the Border Patrol Council, the union representing the thousands of agents who protect our southern border every day. Here is a link with more details: https://pjmedia.com/trending/border-patrol-council-prez-tells-white-house-reporters-walls-work/
Don’t worry, Mexico will pay for “The Wall” as promised umpteen times by Trumplethinskin!
Perhaps then, Andy, a “financial wall ” would work? In other words; no more welfare, free medical, free education etc., etc. for non-US citizens. It’s obvious that these handouts are a significant factor in attracting the huge numbers of people that become illegal immigrants.
RG DeSoto
RG, that is a patently false and, frankly, tiresome argument. Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for food stamps, welfare and federal public benefits. Even qualified immigrants do not automatically qualify for government assistance. They have to undergo a five-year waiting period. How about educating yourself?!
Here’s a simple example of how wrong that statement is. In the state of California, in-state tuition is granted to students that can’t establish legal residency. This is true in more than just California. The states offer enough federally backed incentives that federal incentives themselves are unnecessary.
Incorrect. California requires a minimum of 366 days of state residency in order to qualify for in-state tuition. Along with that (with regard to the University of California), intent to make California one’s permanent home is a REQUIRED element of residence for purposes of tuition.

Bill Clinton signed such a bill over 20 years ago in 1996: The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, or “IIRIRA.” Congress legislated that not only would undocumented immigrants not receive welfare, but legal immigrants wouldn’t get benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid or money for child assistance until they’ve lived here at least five years.
Here’s a list of benefits undocumented immigrants expressly do not receive:
Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP)
Disability, aka Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Food stamps, aka The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Health insurance, aka insurance via the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
Medicaid
Medicare
Social Security
Welfare
Once again, your comments just perpetuate the agenda of confusion from Stormtrooper Talk Radio.
Steve/Pete
I stand corrected.
RG DeSoto
While a wall will not be able to keep every illegal immigrant out, it will certainly cut down on the vast numbers of illegals that sneak into this country every month. It will certainly reduce the numbers of people that our hard-working border guards have to catch and incarcerate until their dubious claims of persecution and asylum demands are adjudicated according to our laws that both Democrats AND Republicans have jointly passed and enacted. To now turn against what they supported simply because they hate the elected leader of our nation, is pure hypocrisy, dishonesty and duplicitousness.
“Vast numbers?”
What in the world is that supposed to mean. Where did that come from? Who said that?
As they say at FOX and the WH, “People are saying” that manawai can’t substantiate anything he puts in a comment!
Let the whining begin. Good thing they will not try to confuse us with facts.
Andy Johnson,
It seems you know nothing about what you are talking about. You are not here in the area where they are coming over the border. You are not here where they are standing in droves on the street corners begging, They want fee medical, food and shelter. They wave THEIR flag. They want and get free medical that we the citizens cannot get. Everything must be in spanish so they understand! The are looting and getting drunk and causing accidents daily, but don’t get punished. We can’t even go to the grocery store without being inundated with them using food stamps in line and not knowing what they can and cannot use them for. There is an increase of housing breakins and robbery. It’s like a zombie movie only it;s Mexicans from across the border. So don’t tell me the wall isn’t worth it. If you were here you would be upset like we are. We work hard for what we have and don’t need them here trying to get everything for free. They wouldn’t let us do this in their country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!!!!
TRUMP 2020!!! Best President Ever!!! Build The Wall!!! Deport every Illegal and all their born in America Kids too!! Viva La Trump!!!
Sally, so sorry to hear that you’re having issues with the hordes of flag-waving Mexicans streaming across our borders. I do, truly, sympathize with your plight.
Here’s a thought—and I don’t know if you have the capacity to understand this, but I’m going to try, anyway. Please open your Bible and turn to Proverbs 17, Verse 28. You’ll find something like this: “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Perhaps you should heed that advice. As a wise man (MLK, Jr.) once said, “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
Most of us live in a house with walls and a front door that locks, the Vatican has walls, Obama has ten foot walls around his place, we generally have walls everywhere to protect things of value. The issue is not that a wall wouldn’t work… the issue is that a wall would work “very very well”. The Dems need new recruits. A wall to protect our border would end their control and they know it.
