A handful of wrestlers from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation placed at the Pa‘ani Challenge all-girls preseason wrestling tournament over the weekend at Punahou School in Honolulu.
A handful of wrestlers from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation placed at the Pa‘ani Challenge all-girls preseason wrestling tournament over the weekend at Punahou School in Honolulu.
Waimea High School’s Shai-Lein Acosta placed second in the novice 132-pound weight class. In the same class, Kapaa High School’s Theresa Lindsey placed fifth. The class competed in a round robin bracket.
Kauai High School’s Janessa Llego-Finney placed fifth in the novice 127-pound weight class, which was double-elimination. Llego-Finney defeated Karleigh Von Manoha of Leilehua High School in the fifth-place match Saturday.
Waimea’s Isley Ulanday placed fifth in the novice A 168-pound class, defeating Kiana Kaneshiro of Hilo High School on Saturday. The division was also double-elimination.
Also, Jayla Albina from Waimea High School placed sixth in the novice 225-pound class. Albina lost to Mililani High’s Abcde Gohier in the fifth-place match Saturday.
While the Pa‘ani Challenge was happening, the Moanalua Duals preseason tournament also took place at Moanalua High School in Honolulu.
A team of all-KIF wrestlers competed at the dual meet tournament, said KIF wrestling director Mac Pigott.
While the Kauai team didn’t win any dual matches, the team did get 12 individual wins, which included Kauai High School’s Coby Lawrence defeating an opponent from Saint Louis School via pinfall and Waimea’s Barak Aviguetero defeating a wrestler from Punahou School also by pin.
The first tournament of the KIF wrestling season is set for Jan. 12 at Kauai High School beginning at 10 a.m.
