WAILUA — Following two weeks of racing in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation outrigger paddling regatta, Kauai High School teams have taken the lead with undefeated records for its Junior Varsity girls, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Mixed teams each holding 10 points, according to KIF records.
The Red Raiders also are second in the JV Mixed, and are tied with Kapaa in the Varsity Girls division, each with eight points.
Kapaa High School, the defending champions from last year’s regattas, sit in a solid second place with eight points apiece for its JV Girls, JV Boys, JV Mixed, and Varsity Girls teams.
Junior varsity teams race for two miles, going up the Wailua River for a mile before turning and returning for its second mile.
Varsity teams race for four miles, paddling up river for two miles before returning to the finish line.
One of the more exciting races, Saturday was between the Kauai A and Kapaa A girls race where the Kauai team (31 minutes, 21.12 seconds) pulled to a three-minute overall time over the Kapaa team (31:24.36).
The next regatta will be the final distance races, Saturday when the first teams leave the start line at 9 a.m. at the Wailua River. Dec. 29 is reserved for make-up races followed by the short-course regatta beginning Jan. 5.
