HONOLULU — Former Hawaii state Rep. Matt LoPresti is asking the state Supreme Court to order a ballot recount for his race to represent Ewa Beach in the state Senate.
Kurt Fevella secured 6,204 votes compared to LoPresti’s 6,087 votes in the Nov. 6 general election. Fevella declared victory and has been settling in as the only Republican in the state Senate.
But LoPresti filed a complaint to the court on Monday, the deadline for candidates to request a recount.
The Democrat says vote tabulation machines weren’t working at the start of election day in at least one precinct. LoPresti says the outcome would be affected if only 58 ballots were miscounted or mishandled.
During the primary campaign, home security video captured LoPresti stealing his opponent’s campaign literature from a resident’s door.
