The repaving of Leho Drive in Wailua was completed Tuesday and the northbound lane of Kuhio Highway and the north entrance to Leho Drive is open motorists.
A sewer line in the area broke Thursday night, spilling an estimated 1,000 gallons of sewage, some of which reached the Wailua River. An initial investigation revealed dirt and debris had entered a pipe due to erosion, causing pressure to build up, and the pipe burst.
During repairs, traffic sometimes backed up for miles in both directions when lanes were limited.
The water quality in the area is slowly improving, according to Surfrider Kauai’s Blue Water Task Force.
